Malaria is caused by a mosquito borne parasite that lives in your blood. It doesn’t go away on its own. In fact, it gets much worse if left untreated. The problem is that it’s tricky to diagnose at first. Symptoms come and go. By the time people in the bush realize they have malaria, it’s already pretty developed. Eventually victims experience seizures, brain swelling, comas, and death. The sooner a victim is treated, the less long term complications will develop. This 16 year old girl was borderline conscious and still faced one or two days of travel to the nearest hospital. Except we picked her up in our floatplane and got her to the hospital thirty minutes later, giving her the best chance for a full recovery.
I wish these patients could meet all the people out there who are making it possible for this guy to help carry their stretcher.
P.S. I forget to give him credit in the video, but Nick Mosca is the pilot who is flying this plane like a boss!
