Fixing Airplanes

Tools Needed for the Job

Here’s a list of tools we’ll need as aviation missionaries (as complied by MMS Aviation).

We’ll also need tools to accomplish this calling.

If you want to donate used tools or help in this particular way, here’s a list of what I’ll need by the time I’m done at MMS Aviation (so I can be equipped to maintain planes on the field). Just contact us if you wish to support us in this way. I’ll take off tools when the need is supplied. If the tools required are not all provided midway through my training, they will be bought using funds from our monthly support.

Note: This is a list as determined by MMS Aviation based upon years of experience in hangar.

I do not need all these tools by the time I begin training as lending is a popular and encouraged practice within the hangar.

Tools should be of Craftsman quality, or better, with a few exceptions.

(S-O) beside the line item denotes the need for Snap-On or like quality for that particular tool.

(B.N.) denotes that particular item should be Brand Name tool (no knock offs).

Socket Sets:

  • 1/4″ Drive Sets to Include:
    • 3/16″ – 9/16″ Sockets, Normal & Deep
      • Note: Craftsman deep wells are advantageous. If purchasing Snap-On deep well sockets, I’ll need to purchase an additional Craftsman 1/4 drive, 1/2″ six point socket, as Snap-On’s socket will not work for Continental Fuel Nozzles.
    • 1/4″ – 9/16″ Swivel Sockets, 12 point (S-O)
    • 30-200 in lb torque wrench (S-O)
  • 3/8″ Drive Set
    • 3/8″ – 1″ Sockets, Normal & Deep
    • 3/8″ – 1″ Crows Foot Wrenches
    • 200 – 1000 in lb torque wrench (S-O)
  • For Both Size Drives:
    • Ratcheting Handle: Including a Fine Toothed 1/4″ Ratchet
    • Breaker Bar
    • Extension Set
    • Adapter Set
      • Note: Craftsmen has a good set
  • 7/8″ Aviation Spark Plug Socket

  • Combination: 1/4″ – 1 1/2″
  • Angle Head: 3/8″ – 1″ (S-O)
    • Note: Included in Snap-On A/C add on kit (SEPACAO)
  • 1″ 8 point socket for old style PT6 fuel pump outlet filter
  • Ignition Set
  • Stubby Set
  • Crescent, Small & Medium
    • Note: Good alternative is Knipex plier wrenches (ADP7, ADP10)
  • Allen Set
  • Gear Wrench (B.N.)
    • Note: Stubby set is very useful

My name's Josh and I'm married to a beautiful woman Janice. We have a daughter named Adilene (or Adi) and a son named Elliot. We're currently living in Ohio and serving as an apprentice at MMS Aviation. The goal is to graduate the apprenticeship with my A&P license and to serve on the mission field as a Maintenance Specialist. Airplanes help deliver the Gospel to hard-to-reach areas and drastically speed up Bible translation. There's a huge need for airplane mechanics right now and God has called us to help fill this need. Thanks for joining us on this journey!
